Where to stay near Colombo Airport after a late flight
Many flights into Sri Lanka land late in the evening or in the middle of the night. After a long journey, the last thing you want is a three-hour drive to Kandy or a slow crawl through Colombo traffic. This guide explains what to expect when you land at Bandaranaike International Airport, and why sleeping close to the airport on your first night is usually the smartest plan.

First, where is the airport?
Bandaranaike International Airport (airport code CMB) is in Katunayake, north of Colombo, not in the city itself. Locals often call it "BIA" or "Katunayake airport." That matters: Colombo city is still a drive away, while the quiet coastal towns of Negombo, Uswetakeiyawa and Pamunugama are much closer.
Getting through arrivals at night
The airport handles flights through the night, so landing late is completely normal here. A little preparation makes the first hour much easier:
- Visa: apply for your Sri Lanka ETA before you fly through the official government website, eta.gov.lk, and keep the approval on your phone. Check the current rules there, as they can change.
- Money: you'll find currency exchange counters and ATMs in the arrivals area, so you can get some Sri Lankan rupees for small expenses.
- Phone: local SIM cards are sold in arrivals. A data SIM makes WhatsApp and ride-hailing apps easy from the start.
Landing after midnight? Book your room from the night before. For example, if your flight lands at 2 am on the 15th, book the night of the 14th, so your room is ready and waiting when you arrive.
How to get to your hotel
You have two main options after midnight:
- Airport taxi counters: available in the arrivals hall, and the most dependable option late at night. Agree on the price before you get in.
- Ride-hailing apps: PickMe and Uber operate in Sri Lanka and show the price up front, but drivers can be harder to find very late at night, so don't rely on an app as your only plan.
Why not go straight to Colombo, Kandy or the south?
It's tempting to "save a day" by driving on immediately. In practice, you'll arrive exhausted, often in the early hours, and many hotels won't let you check in until the afternoon. A proper night's sleep near the airport means you start your trip fresh, travel in daylight, when the journey is more comfortable and the views are worth seeing, and still reach most destinations by lunchtime.
Where to stay near the airport
You'll find three kinds of places within a short drive:
- Airport-area hotels in Katunayake: as close as it gets, but usually on busy main roads.
- Negombo: a lively beach town with many hotels, restaurants and the famous lagoon. Busier and more touristy.
- The quiet coast south of Negombo (Uswetakeiyawa and Pamunugama): a narrow strip between the Negombo lagoon and the sea, with small family-run guesthouses and boutique hotels. Quieter, more local, and still close to the airport.
What to check before you book a first-night hotel
- Can you check in late at night? Confirm someone will be awake to receive you.
- Will they send you their location, so your driver can find them easily at night?
- What time is breakfast, and can they pack something if you leave early?
- Is there air conditioning? After a long flight in a warm climate, it makes a big difference to your sleep.
- How long is the drive to your next destination in the morning?
Your first morning
If you've slept near the coast, take an hour before you move on. Walk on the beach, watch the fishing boats, or stroll along the lagoon. It's a gentle, very Sri Lankan way to begin your trip, and a far better first memory than a night spent in a car.
